New crossover in the Mazda lineup
If you thought Mazda’s crossover lineup was already too confusing, get ready for new changes. The company has filed a trademark application for the CX-40 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Additionally, there is a possibility that the brand is working on the CX-10 and CX-20 models.
Current lineup and new prospects
In the US, Mazda already sells several SUVs, including the CX-30, CX-5, CX-50, CX-70, and CX-90. In other markets, the CX-3, CX-6e, CX-60, and CX-80 are also available. Most of them look very similar, making them difficult to distinguish. It seems Mazda is continuing its strategy of filling every possible market segment with new SUVs.

What is known about the CX-40
The application to register the CX-40 name was filed on February 27. It is logical to assume that this model will slot between the CX-30 and the CX-5/CX-50. It is not yet known which platform it will be based on or what engines it will receive.
Will it be a coupe-like crossover?

One option is to create a model with a lower roofline, similar to the CX-4, which Mazda introduced in 2016 exclusively for the Chinese market. That car looked like an interesting combination of a crossover and a wagon, and there is room in the current Mazda lineup for a similar model.
Other new models: CX-10 and CX-20
Mazda has also filed a trademark application for the name CX-10. This could be a compact model similar in size to the Hyundai Casper Electric (known as the Inster in some markets). Additionally, the brand registered the name CX-20 back in 2020 and is actively working on this model as a successor to the outdated CX-3.
Mazda’s expansion of its crossover lineup reflects the company’s ambition to cover as many market segments as possible. The introduction of the CX-40 will likely fill the gap between compact and mid-size models, while the CX-10 could be a response to the growing demand for urban micro-SUVs. This strategy allows the brand to compete with other manufacturers who are actively offering a wide variety of SUV options, although it complicates the choice for buyers due to the large number of similar models.
