Subaru introduced the updated BRZ for 2027: minimal changes, but the price has increased
Subaru has officially unveiled the 2027 model year BRZ sports coupe. This was a logical step after Toyota showed an updated version of its twin, the GR86, earlier this week. However, unlike its ‘brother,’ the new BRZ received significantly fewer updates.
According to the manufacturer, the main changes to the car only concern the safety system. Specifically, the improved EyeSight system now uses a new wide-angle monocular camera, providing a larger field of view. Additionally, the top-spec tS version received rear parking sensors.
Comparison with the Toyota GR86: is there a reason for disappointment?
Subaru’s updates look quite modest compared to what Toyota offered for the 2027 GR86. The latter received not only a new camera but also a fresh ‘Thunder’ body color, as well as an interior with ‘iron black’ accents for the Premium version. Furthermore, a ‘Cockpit Red’ interior became available for the GR86, although in Subaru a similar solution is already standard for the Limited version.
Most importantly, Toyota’s engineers refined the powertrain. They changed the throttle calibration for a smoother and more linear response to accelerator pedal input. The gearshift mechanism was also optimized: the lockout facet between 4th and 5th gear was widened by approximately 0.02 inches for a crisper and smoother shift.
Subaru does not mention similar modifications for the BRZ, so they likely were not applied. If so, this is somewhat disappointing.
Prices and Specifications
Despite minimal changes, the price of the BRZ has increased. The 2027 BRZ Limited version starts at $36,140 (excluding the $1,245 destination fee). This is $330 more than its predecessor, which cost $35,860 with a $1,195 delivery fee.
The top-spec BRZ tS now costs $40,015, which is $460 more expensive. The main reason for the price increase is the rise in the Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) to $38,770.
Both versions are equipped with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder boxer engine producing 228 hp (170 kW / 231 PS) and 184 lb-ft (249 Nm) of torque. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard, but a 6-speed automatic is available for the Premium version for an additional $850.
2027 Subaru BRZ Prices in the USA
| Trim | Transmission | MSRP |
| BRZ Limited | 6MT | $36,140 |
| BRZ Limited | 6AT | $36,990 |
| BRZ tS | 6MT | $38,770 |
It’s worth noting that the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 are not just competitors, but technically identical cars developed through a joint partnership. Traditionally, they differ only in suspension tuning, front bumper design, and some options. However, in the case of the 2027 update, Toyota went further by making changes to the engine and transmission operation, making the GR86 a more attractive choice for enthusiasts seeking the best handling. Subaru, seemingly, focused on safety and a slight increase in comfort, which might be justified for buyers who value practicality over sharp driving sensations. Considering the small price difference, potential buyers should carefully compare both models before making a choice.
