Updated BMW X1 crossover to get iX3 appearance and, likely, a new name

Updated BMW X1 M35i spotted testing: new design and possible renaming

Spy photographers have managed to capture the updated version of the BMW X1, but this time the M Performance variant was caught on camera. The model is currently known as the X1 M35i, but rumors suggest that after the update, it might receive the name M40i.

New design in the style of Neue Klasse

Regardless of the name, the crossover is entering the Neue Klasse era and gets a completely new front end that closely resembles the iX3. As seen in the photos, the model features a vertical double kidney grille, framed by new headlights.

These are joined by a revised hood and a new front bumper. The latter has a wide lower air intake with a prominent central support, as well as vertical air curtains on the outer edges.

Profile and rear

The profile of the car remains almost unchanged and features familiar 19-inch 871M wheels, complemented by a powerful braking system with blue calipers. However, additional changes may appear by the start of production.

The rear also evokes a sense of déjà vu, but updated taillights and a more restrained rear bumper can be noticed. They are complemented by the same spoiler and exhaust system with four tailpipes as on the current model.

Interior and technology

Spy photographers were unable to get a look inside, but previous images showed that the crossover will get Panoramic iDrive. As a result, a display stretching from pillar to pillar will appear at the base of the windshield, along with a new infotainment system based on Operating System X.

The changes don’t end there: the X1 will have an entirely new instrument panel and a revised center console. A new steering wheel and some smaller updates are also expected.

Technical specifications

The current version of the X1 M35i is equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 312 hp (233 kW / 316 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque. It is paired with a seven-speed automatic transmission and a standard all-wheel-drive system. This allows the crossover to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.2 seconds, reaching a top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h).

The model update will likely bring not only visual changes but also a potential increase in power, matching the new M40i name. This indicates that BMW continues to refine its lineup of compact crossovers, focusing on a combination of modern technology, design, and performance. The appearance of Neue Klasse elements even on the younger model points to a strategy of unifying the style of the entire model range, allowing customers to access advanced solutions in a more accessible format.
