The price of $775,000 for the SLS AMG was initially thought to be a typo, until the transfer was confirmed

Record Sale of Mercedes SLS AMG: $775,000 for a Car with 251 Miles

A 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG with just 251 miles on the odometer became a sensation at the Bring a Trailer auction, where it sold for a staggering $775,000. This price sparked a wave of discussion and doubt among collectors, as the final bidding was highly unusual. Many assumed it was a data entry error, but all suspicions were disproven.

How the Bidding Unfolded and Why Everyone Was Skeptical

To understand the scale of the event, it’s worth noting that the most expensive SLS sale on Bring a Trailer was previously $755,000 for a Black Series version in 2022. The highest price for a standard SLS on this platform reached $401,000. This is why the auction caused such astonishment: when the bid reached $575,000, another participant raised it to $576,000. Moments later, a new account jumped straight to $775,000, instantly ending the auction and leaving the comments in complete shock.

Reaction and Confirmation of the Deal

The reaction was immediate. Some speculated that the bidder intended to enter $577,000, while others doubted the deal would close at all. Bring a Trailer quickly responded to the speculation, explaining that the winner manually entered the amount and confirmed it through an additional confirmation screen, which constitutes a legally binding purchase commitment.

Questions remained until two more confirmations arrived. The seller-dealer announced that he had received full payment. Additionally, Dave Kinney, publisher of the Hagerty Price Guide, noted that he had personally seen documents confirming the bank transfer, calling the sale real, albeit exceptional.

The original price of the car in 2011 was $223,345, which, adjusted for inflation, is approximately $339,000 today.

What This Means for the Market

Whether this sale becomes a new benchmark or remains a unique case, time will tell. However, it is worth noting that Bring a Trailer’s sales history shows a rapid increase in the value of the SLS AMG over the past few years, although no result has come close to this one. Now every future seller will have a new figure to reference, even if replicating it turns out to be much harder than simply entering it into the bid box.

This case demonstrates how rare cars with minimal mileage can achieve prices that significantly exceed market expectations. It also highlights the growing interest in modern classic AMG models, which are gradually transitioning into the category of investment assets. For collectors, it is a signal that even “standard” versions of iconic models can become objects of fierce bidding wars at auctions, especially if they are preserved in perfect condition with minimal mileage.
