Kia’s Next Electric Van Is a 17-Foot Rectangular Box on Wheels That Will Challenge Volkswagen

Announcement ahead of IAA Transportation

Kia is preparing to officially unveil the new PV7 at the IAA Transportation show on September 14. Ahead of the premiere, the company released several teaser images, but more details have emerged thanks to spy photographers who spotted the van during testing in Europe.

The PV7 will become the second member of the Platform Beyond Vehicle family, developing the ideas of the PV5 presented last year. The new model features a stepped front end and a large panoramic windshield. These are complemented by black elements in the upper part of the body and black plastic cladding at the bottom.

Cargo-oriented body

The designers used a so-called one-box profile. In essence, it is a box on wheels, and the main goal here is maximum capacity. The prototype is equipped with two sliding doors with an unusual window arrangement between them, as well as an almost flat roof that increases usable volume.

At the rear, vertical cargo compartment doors and a small bumper are visible. Along with them are vertical taillights and a recessed license plate niche. Thick rear pillars with black accents visually create the effect of continuous glazing around the cabin.

Dimensions and platform

The concept version of the PV7 was shown back in 2024. According to available data, the production van will be about 5,300 mm long. For comparison, the PV5 Cargo Long stretches 4,695 mm, and its wheelbase is 2,995 mm.

The new model will be built on the Electric-Global Modular Platform for Service (E-GMP.S). This is a specialized fleet version of the E-GMP architecture, which also underpins the Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Genesis GV60 and other electric vehicles.

Batteries and power

There are no official technical details about the PV7 yet. Based on the PV5, buyers may be offered a 43.3 kWh LFP battery or NCM batteries of 51.5 or 71.2 kWh. The smaller model has electric motors with 89.4 kW (122 hp) and 120 kW (163 hp), with identical torque of 250 N·m.

Given the larger dimensions of the PV7, the arrival of 51.5 and 71.2 kWh batteries looks logical, but a more powerful battery cannot be ruled out either. The 120 kW electric motor is also a likely candidate, possibly alongside a more powerful version. The manufacturer will reveal final information by the end of the month.

What’s next for the PV7

The anticipation around the PV7 is entirely justified. The PBV lineup at Kia is seen as one of the key growth drivers: the company is gradually transitioning commercial vehicles to electricity and wants to offer customers modular solutions. If the PV5 covers the segment of more compact urban vans, the PV7 is aimed at larger cargo flows and could become a competitor to the Ford Transit or similar models.

In addition, using the E-GMP.S platform version allows Kia to unify production with other Hyundai Group electric vehicles, which will positively affect fleet maintenance costs. So at IAA Transportation, we should expect not only detailed technical specifications, but also an explanation of how Kia views the future of commercial electric transport.
