Apple Car Key Now Available for Toyota and Lexus, But Service Will Become a Monthly Subscription After Trial Period

Official: Toyota RAV4 Gains Support for Apple Digital Key

The Apple digital car key technology is now available for the Toyota RAV4. This is the first model from the brand with this feature. Interestingly, this became known not from an official press release, but from a post by a car owner on social media. Toyota later confirmed the information and shared details.

The feature allows owners to lock, unlock, and start their RAV4 using an iPhone or Apple Watch, without the need to use a physical key. The Digital Car Key technology was introduced by Apple back in 2020, and despite being already supported by over 30 manufacturers, Toyota is only joining them now.

How the Digital Key System Works

As explained by one 2026 RAV4 owner on Reddit:

I approach the car without keys, with my phone in my pocket, it automatically unlocks when I grab the door handle, and then starts inside, even though the phone is still in my pocket.

Toyota explained that the new feature is linked to the latest generation of the Toyota Audio Multimedia system with an enhanced digital key. The key is now managed through a compatible smartphone’s wallet app, such as Apple, Google, or Samsung Wallet. Users can not only open and start the vehicle but also set permissions for sharing the key with other drivers.

Which Models Will Get the Technology

Currently, compatibility with Apple Car Key is only available for the 2026 model year RAV4. However, a company representative confirmed that the feature will soon appear on other models as well. Depending on trim level and technology package choices, these may include the 2026 Camry, Grand Highlander, Land Cruiser, Prius, Tacoma, Crown, and Crown Signia.

As for Lexus, the first model with the new interface and digital key will be the anticipated 2026 Lexus ES, expected later this year.

Subscription Terms and Device Requirements

It is important to note that the digital key requires an active subscription to the Toyota Remote Connect service. New owners are provided with a free one-year trial period, after which the service will cost $15 per month.

Furthermore, there are device requirements. Apple users will need an iPhone 11 or newer, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or newer. Toyota also notes that some Google and Samsung devices may also use this feature, although specific models are not specified.

Toyota RAV4 on the road

The arrival of the digital key at Toyota is, on one hand, a logical step within the general trend of integrating smartphones into vehicle operation. On the other hand, the necessity of a monthly fee after the trial period ends may raise questions among consumers, especially against the backdrop of competitors often offering similar basic functions without a recurring subscription. This makes one think about which services will be considered standard in the future and which will require separate payment. It is also important that the expansion of the list of supported models will occur within the year, making the technology accessible to more drivers.
