An unusual modification of the fifth-generation Chevrolet Camaro, created by Trans Am Depot and inspired by the iconic Pontiac Trans Am, demonstrates how retro revivals can be very successful. This special car, known as the Bandit Edition, is a rare specimen, as only 77 such vehicles were produced.
The car, one of these 77 examples, will be sold at a Mecum auction next month. Its distinction from a regular Camaro lies in the extensive exterior redesign, which recreates key design elements of the original Trans Am.
Details of the Exterior Conversion
To achieve the desired look, the Camaro’s body underwent significant changes. The front received a new bumper, splitter, gold headlight surrounds, and a split radiator grille. A completely new hood was also fabricated, featuring the famous Trans Am bird graphics.
The car received a new set of wheels with silver and gold spokes, which reveal powerful brake mechanisms. Gold pinstripe stripes beautifully contrast with the black paint, as do the Trans Am logos on the sides. The rear was also completely redesigned: new exhaust pipes, special rear lights, a spoiler, and many gold accents were installed. One of the most impressive features of this rebuild is the removable T-top roof panels.
Interior and Technical Specifications
The car’s interior features reupholstered seats, special badges, embroidery on the headrests, and intricate graphics on the door panels. The dashboard is even signed by the late actor Burt Reynolds, adding historical value to the vehicle.
In line with the redesigned look, the car received a 7.4-liter supercharged V8 engine that delivers 840 horsepower, which undoubtedly significantly enhances the appeal of the modified Camaro.
This car can be described as absurd, nostalgic, and very loud, and it clearly knows what it’s doing. It is a vivid example of how a modern platform can be reimagined through the lens of classic design, creating something unique for collectors and fans of American automotive manufacturing. Similar projects often spark lively discussions among purists, but they also demonstrate the viability of iconic forms in a new era.
