Car License Plates by Regions of Ukraine – Decoding New State Signs 2021

Current information for those who are looking for the KA region of Ukraine and cannot understand what these new car license plates with green letters or unknown letter combinations are all about as of 2021.

And although much has already been said and retold about this topic online, practice shows that most Ukrainians are still confused about the affiliation of numbers to a particular area and region. Perhaps one of the most vivid examples is electric vehicle plates with dark green letters and the designation ZA.

Regarding region designations, many people still cannot get used to the fact that the Kyiv combination “AA” is now “KA”, and, for example, the Odessa numbers “VN” are now “NN”. And this is just the tip of the iceberg, as “IE” even causes confusion among those who see such a combination of letters for the first time. To make it easier to understand, here is a brief overview of the new letter combinations in the designation of vehicle license plates in Ukraine.

Additional region codes were introduced back in 2013 (yes, indeed!), but in some areas, the new coding is just beginning to appear (it actually began to be implemented in 2018). So, remember the key rule:

  • If the first letter in the region code of Ukraine was A (AA, again), it is now replaced with K. Once again – Vinnytsia region (AV) or Lutsk (AS) are now KV and KS, respectively.
  • If the first letter in the state number was B, it is now replaced with N. Therefore, in Odessa, it’s not VN anymore, but NN, in Lviv not VS, but NS, and so on.
  • The letter C. It is now replaced by I to indicate the region. Chernihiv region (SV) is now IV, and Cherkasy SA is now IA.

This is everything you need to remember to navigate the decoding of the new number coding in Ukraine. And to reinforce, here is the full table:
