Special black license plates are gaining incredible popularity in the state of Colorado. Over the past year, they have not only become the most popular specialty plates but have also outsold all other thematic license plates in the state combined. These license plates were introduced in January 2023. An annual fee of $25 for each such plate is directed to the Colorado Disability Funding Committee. The funds are distributed among organizations that support people with disabilities.
As of the end of 2025, over 486 thousand vehicles in the state were registered with such plates. In the past year alone, they generated $12.15 million in revenue, accounting for 7.69 percent of all license plates in Colorado. For those who also wish to support this initiative, blue and red plates are available, which added approximately $880 thousand to the budget.
Specific Aid and Impact
One of the organizations receiving funding thanks to this program is the Housing Builders Foundation. This non-profit organization specializes in modifying housing for people with disabilities. In 2025, thanks to their work, 176 homes were adapted.
“These are not the easiest times, the economic situation is not the best, and the housing construction industry is also going through tough times. Therefore, finding alternative sources of funding, such as these license plates, is a real blessing for us. We are proud to be growing at a time when other non-profit organizations are struggling. Over the past year, we have managed to expand our activities,” said Alice Wurst, Communications Director of the Housing Builders Foundation.
“The awareness that there is a stable source of funding we can rely on year after year greatly helps us in budget planning and determining how many people we will be able to reach,” she added.
Variety of Specialty Plates
Colorado has dozens of varieties of specialty license plates for local vehicle owners. Among them are plates honoring nurses, firefighters, as well as plates to raise awareness about cancer. It is worth noting that the trend of introducing black license plates is spreading to other US states, including Indiana, Texas, Iowa, New York, Tennessee, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
