De Tomaso Collaborates with ItalTecnica to Create a New V12
The De Tomaso company, which has not been in the news headlines often lately, has announced a new collaboration with the engineering firm ItalTecnica. Together, they have presented a new engine that will become the heart of the future P900 supercar.
Technical Specifications of the New Engine
It is a naturally aspirated 7.0-liter V12, developed exclusively for use on the race track. The engine has a 65-degree V-angle configuration, an eight-stage dry sump system, and high-strength internal components.
The foundation is a crankcase machined from a solid block of aluminum, forged connecting rods, and ultra-light pistons. Each cylinder bank has two camshafts, and each cylinder has four titanium valves. Engineers also applied a lightweight carbon fiber intake manifold. The total mass of the power unit is less than 200 kilograms.
The goal was to create a power unit with a true identity, one that prioritizes response and enhanced acoustic characteristics no less than measurable output power.
Power and Transmission
The total engine power is 888 horsepower at 9500 revolutions per minute, which is slightly below the redline at 10,200 rpm. Power is transmitted exclusively to the rear axle via a sequential gearbox from Xtrac.
The Path to Creating the P900
De Tomaso first presented the P900 back in 2022. Initially, it was planned that the car would receive a 220 kg V12 from Capricorn, capable of revving up to 12,300 rpm. The company explained the changes by stating that the car’s development took place against the backdrop of a rapid transformation of the entire automotive world.
While many manufacturers are focusing on electric vehicles, De Tomaso consciously rejected this path. Engineers emphasize that the engine is created for those who remember the era when V12s in Formula 1 defined the atmosphere of Sunday races, and noise was not a by-product but a defining hallmark of the brand.
Expectations and Plans
De Tomaso has not yet named an exact date for the start of P900 production but confirms that the car will receive visual and aerodynamic updates. An updated version of the model is planned to be shown this year. This gives hope to the 18 clients who have ordered the P900 that they won’t have to wait too long.
The development of such a highly specialized and powerful engine in the era of widespread electrification is a bold step. It demonstrates that the niche of true “driver’s” cars, focused on pure emotions and the sensation of driving, remains alive. The success of the P900 could become an important signal to the entire automotive world that mechanical craftsmanship and the acoustic symphony of an engine still hold great value for true enthusiasts.
