The research shows that many Americans do not have a positive attitude towards Tesla or Musk.
55% have a negative attitude towards Musk, and 49% feel the same towards Tesla.
The vast majority would not consider buying or leasing a Tesla, at least partly because of Musk.
It turns out that Germans are not the only ones resisting. A new study showed that as many as 67% of Americans would not consider owning or leasing a company car. This is undoubtedly partly due to Musk.
Of the respondents, 20% named Musk as ‘the whole reason’ they would not consider buying a Tesla, while 17% consider him ‘part of the reason’. This means that Musk is preventing 37% of Americans. This is much more than the 27% who said that the executive had no role in their need not to consider Tesla.
Once, Musk enjoyed a cult status among his followers, but this seems lost. When asked, ‘Is Musk the reason you own or lease a Tesla or consider owning or leasing in the future?’, only 1% responded yes to the question ‘the whole reason’ or ‘part of the reason’.
The study, conducted by YouGov, interviewed 1,677 adults in the US online from March 20 to 24, 2025, with a margin of error of about 2.6%, and found that most people have a negative opinion of Musk. 45% have a very negative view, and another 10% see him somewhat negatively. This contrasts with a meager 21% who have a very positive opinion.
Favorable views of Tesla closely mirror Musk’s, as 49% of Americans have a negative opinion of the automaker. On the other hand, only 37% hold a positive view.
48% of people did not approve of how Musk’s management department handled things, despite 49% lobbying for a reduction in federal spending. 52% of people also believe that Musk tries to help himself more than to help the country.
All of this suggests that Musk and Tesla have a tough road ahead. Of course, when people are so angry that they are ready to undertake challenges and throw Molotov cocktails at your cars, it is expected.
