Tesla is Testing the Long-Wheelbase Model Y in Europe
Despite the update earlier this year, the Model Y is losing popularity, so Tesla is preparing several new features to attract buyers. Among them is the Performance version, which disappeared from the lineup in the spring, as well as the long-wheelbase Model Y L.
This model is already available in China and will soon appear in Europe. Its wheelbase is increased by 150 mm compared to the standard Model Y (2890 mm), which will allow for the addition of a third row of seats, likely in a 2+2+2 configuration.
Design Changes and Specifications
The overall outlines of the Model Y L remain similar to the standard model, but the lengthening is noticeable due to the shape of the rear doors. If in the regular version the wheel arch significantly intrudes into the door opening, in the long-wheelbase version the door line almost reaches the wheel. The front end, including the LED panel and narrow headlights, remains unchanged after the restyling in February.
One of the details that indicates the Model Y L is the spoiler in the “ducktail” style, which is usually associated with tuned BMWs.
Despite the changes, the Model Y L will not become faster – due to the increased mass, it may slightly lag behind the standard all-wheel-drive version, which accelerates to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds.
The return of the third row of seats, now with more space, could be key for the European market, especially after the discontinuation of Model X sales in the region. This gives the Model Y L a competitive advantage among family crossovers.
