by Ford is preparing a sensational return to the world of endurance racing. The American automaker will unveil its new LMDh hypercar, set to debut at the legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2027. The company has already begun teasing fans, revealing the first details about the car and its powertrain.
First Teasers and Design
The first teaser appeared online in early July, coinciding with the celebration of US Independence Day. The short video showcased the aggressive silhouette of the future hypercar with a dramatic aerodynamic design. The footage reveals a massive rear wing, a shark fin, a roof-mounted air intake, and a narrow front end. Visually, the car aligns with the styling of other LMDh class competitors.
The Heart of the Hypercar: The Legendary Coyote V8
The most exciting detail was the engine. Ford confirmed that the hypercar is based on the famous naturally aspirated V8 Coyote used in the Mustang. However, for racing needs, its displacement has been increased to 5.4 liters. The sound of this engine promises to be incredibly powerful, approaching the iconic roar of the Cadillac V8. The naturally aspirated engine will work in conjunction with a hybrid system.

Competition and Future Plans
Ford will not be the only newcomer to the LMDh class in 2027. Alongside it, McLaren MCL-HY will debut with its own hypercar, equipped with a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 and a hybrid system. This year, Genesis has already joined the class with the GMR-001 model. Thus, new players are being added to existing participants from Lamborghini, Alpine, Porsche, Cadillac, BMW, and Acura. All these cars will also compete against LMH class machines represented by Toyota, Glickenhaus, Peugeot, Ferrari, Vanwall, Isotta Fraschini, and Aston Martin.
Ford plans to begin test runs of its hypercar next month at several European tracks. Two cars will participate in the championship. The drivers will be Matt Campbell, Nick Yelloly, Tom Blomqvist, Mike Rockenfeller, Logan Sargeant, and Sebastien Priaulx.
Ford’s return to the top tier of endurance racing is a landmark event. The company has a rich history at Le Mans, notably the legendary rivalry with Ferrari in the 1960s. The choice of a naturally aspirated V8 over the turbocharged engines used by many competitors demonstrates Ford’s desire to retain its signature character and sound.
