Genesis simultaneously pursues a V8 top model and a compact electric car

Genesis is considering creating a compact electric car

Breaking into the premium car market is no easy task, partly due to strong customer loyalty to iconic brands such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and BMW. Despite the challenges, Genesis remains committed to its mission and is exploring new market segments for expansion.

In just a few weeks, the premium brand owned by Hyundai will unveil its new flagship model — a three-row fully electric GV90. Positioned as a more prestigious alternative to the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9, it demonstrates the company’s intention to grow and challenge established brands.

A look at smaller models

Genesis is not limiting itself to the top market segments. According to Peter Kronchnabell, Managing Director of Genesis Europe, the company is also considering the possibility of releasing smaller models that would sit below the compact GV60.

We are still evaluating this opportunity, but we cannot confirm anything yet. For a growing brand, we need to pay attention to fast-growing segments where we might need to be present to attract customers.

A cautious approach to new segments

Kronchnabell emphasized that the company should only enter segments with long-term prospects, rather than chasing short-term success.

There are certain niches. For example, there is no true premium pickup truck. But is it worth entering this segment? There are segments where there might be free space, but they do not make sense for us. You have to be very careful when considering such opportunities and not go there just because there seems to be a short-term gain.

V8-hypercar Magma as a flagship

Genesis is not only thinking about smaller and more affordable models. At the end of last year, the company introduced the Magma GT concept, which envisions a mid-engine sports car with a V8 engine. This model is expected to hit the market within the next few years.

Thus, Genesis is simultaneously working on two opposite directions: creating a more affordable compact electric car to attract new customers and developing an extreme V8 hypercar to strengthen its premium brand image. This reflects the company’s strategic vision to appeal to a broad audience while also creating an iconic product for enthusiasts. The decision to launch a “small” electric car will likely depend on how quickly demand for compact premium EVs grows in Europe and other regions, while the Magma will become a symbol of the brand’s technological ambition.
