Hyundai teases new electric crossover in China, significantly different from the Ioniq 9 model

Hyundai is preparing to introduce a new fully electric SUV, specifically designed for the Chinese market. This upcoming model, still unnamed, is the result of a Beijing Hyundai joint venture and recently appeared in an official teaser ahead of its expected launch later this year.

The teaser shows a camouflaged SUV prototype during cold weather testing. Despite the concealment, we can notice distinct styling elements that set this SUV apart from Hyundai’s global model, the Ioniq 9, which is not present in China.

Recently, Hyundai opened a new research and development center in Shanghai, specializing in the development of electric models.

While we still await detailed specifications, it is likely that the new SUV will be built on Hyundai’s E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), which is shared by their Ioniq and Kona models. This platform supports both single and dual-motor configurations and can accommodate battery packs sized up to 110.3 kWh, indicating that this SUV may offer impressive range and performance.

Currently, Beijing Hyundai’s offerings are limited to internal combustion engine (ICE) models, including popular cars like the Sonata and Elantra sedans, the Tucson L and Santa Fe SUVs, and the Mufasa SUV. The only electric model available in China now is the performance-oriented Ioniq 5 N, imported directly from Hyundai’s global lineup.

More details about this new fully electric SUV will be revealed on March 28. Whether it will be an official premiere or another teaser is currently unknown, but for now, we have to settle for the teaser video below.
