Weekend Quarantine and Curfew – What You Need to Know

On November 4, Ukraine set another anti-record for the level of coronavirus cases. However, the alarming situation with COVID-19 is also present in other European countries, especially in France and the UK, and Germany has introduced the so-called lockdown (isolation). As of November 9, Ukraine may also impose strict restrictions, including a curfew and weekend quarantine.

According to the latest data as of 10 AM on November 4, the Minister of Health Maksym Stepanov is convinced that tightening measures is unavoidable, currently the question is about the scenario. There are several options – introducing a weekend quarantine or enforcing a curfew (with fines for its violation).

Curfew Due to Coronavirus

Will there be a curfew in Ukraine? With a high probability, this will not happen, since such measures in the country require the introduction of a state of emergency. And in the context of the upcoming second round of elections, this is highly unlikely.

As for other countries – Italy and Hungary have chosen this path. This involves closing shopping centers on weekends and holidays, and reducing public transport passengers by 50%.

Additionally, fitness centers, cinemas, and other mass gathering places are closed, transitioning to online learning (for senior classes), and wearing masks even during lessons, not just during breaks (for younger students). Moreover, there is a measure prohibiting walking outside without valid reasons from midnight to 5 AM.

Weekend Quarantine

This is the most likely scenario for Ukraine. Possibly, from next Monday, some stores and cafes will be closed, and restaurants will only be able to offer “takeout,” as it was in the spring. Restrictions on car travel (and the number of people in a car) may be introduced, as well as reduced public transport passengers during weekends and holidays.

“I do not rule out that we may propose a “weekend quarantine” – when stricter restrictions come into effect on weekends. We are doing this to break the chain of disease transmission,” Stepanov stated. The Ministry of Health claims that facing the second wave of coronavirus will not be easy, and the number of cases will increase. According to the latest information, the weekend quarantine in Ukraine will be in effect from Friday evening to Monday morning. Weekdays will be less restricted, but everything will depend not only on the situation in the country as a whole but also on the dynamics of the disease level and bed occupancy in each competitive region.

If the bill is passed, fines for breaching quarantine measures may also be introduced, ranging from 10 to 15 minimums (i.e., 170 to 225 hryvnias).

Lockdown

A lockdown is what entrepreneurs and the rest of Ukraine’s citizens fear the most. Unlike most European countries where the government financially supports businesses, there is nothing similar in our country.

If a lockdown is introduced, it will definitely hit the economy, which is already “on its knees.” Remind you, this is the strictest form of restriction, including border closures and limiting free movement within and beyond the country. Additionally, it involves closing educational institutions, catering, and so on.

P.S. Due to the second wave of the pandemic, pulse oximeters in Ukraine have become scarce, similar to masks and antiseptics during the first wave in the spring.
