Volvo Changes Its Electric Vehicle Strategy: New Models with Internal Combustion Engines and Electricity

Volvo has decided not to completely abandon cars with internal combustion engines, continuing to update its traditional models in parallel with their electric counterparts. The first in this new strategy were the 90-series SUVs – the updated XC90 and the fully electric EX90. At a recent test drive, journalists were able to compare both models.

The EX90, introduced back in 2022, only entered production in 2024 due to supply chain and software issues. The second-generation XC90, which debuted in 2014, received updates in 2019 and 2024.

Technical Differences

Both SUVs have three rows of seats but are built on different platforms: the XC90 uses the old SPA architecture, while the EX90 uses the new SPA 2. Furthermore, the XC90 offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, while the EX90 is only available in a fully electric version.

“The EX90 feels like a step into the future. You immediately feel the difference in ride quality thanks to the new platform and more advanced air suspension”

Design and Interior

Externally, the EX90 looks more modern than its “gasoline” colleague, especially at the rear. However, some design solutions, like the split rear lights, are controversial. Inside, the EX90 bets on minimalism, while the XC90 offers more natural materials and a traditional layout.

Driving Qualities

The XC90 remains an excellent car for long trips with a smooth ride and a quiet cabin. However, the EX90 surpasses it in dynamics, handling, and comfort level, especially in the Performance version with 510 hp. The new air suspension of the electric car deals with road imperfections more effectively.

Despite the higher price, the EX90 seems a more promising option, especially for those ready to switch to electric cars. However, the updated XC90 retains its appeal for fans of traditional engines, offering a good balance of price and quality.
