Preston Tucker in 1948 advertised his creation as the best car in the world. Indeed, the car was very innovative for its time.
The streamlined Tucker 48 was equipped with a rear-mounted opposed engine with 166 hp and a semi-automatic transmission. It featured an independent suspension for all wheels, and the central front headlight could turn. Furthermore, Tucker was the first to use a safety frame that protects during rollovers.
However, mass production could not be established due to competitor sabotage and reliability issues.
Only 50 Tucker 48s were produced, and almost all were sedans.
The prototype convertible was built in a single instance and was completed after the company closed. The car changed hands many times until it was restored in 2010. Since then, it has traveled only 16 km.
