The name of the car brand “IM by MG Motor” could be one of the most absurd

IM Motors is preparing to enter the rapidly growing electric vehicle market, which, let’s admit, is already dominated by Chinese cars. However, the company is taking a somewhat strange step in terms of branding: the cars will be sold under the new IM brand, introduced by MG Motor. Let that name sink in — yes, it doesn’t sound too smooth. Despite the curious name, the company plans to introduce two interesting models to the domestic market. IM5 and IM6, which are already on sale in, will become the main cars.

There is no official explanation for the name change in Australia, but we know that both cars will be made with right-hand drive thanks to cooperation with SAIC, Alibaba, and Zhangjiang Hi-Tech. At the moment introduced by MG Motor has not provided much specific information about the Australian versions of these cars. However, it is possible to assume that they will likely be very similar to the models already available in China. The sleek IM5 will compete with Tesla Model 3 and BMW i4, but will be longer and wider, and will likely start at around AU$70,000 (about $44,200 at the current exchange rate) and go up to AU$95,000 (~$60,000). In China, IM sells a sedan and SUV with electric architectures of 400V, 800V, and 900V, and battery packs of 75 kWh, 83 kWh, and 100 kWh.

Entry-level rear-wheel-drive models deliver 290 hp (216 kW) and 332 lb-ft (450 Nm), while flagship versions feature impressive 776 hp (579 kW) and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm). Reportedly, the IM5 sedan can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 2.74 seconds, while the SUV takes 3.48 seconds. Like many other new electric vehicles, the cabins of both cars heavily focus on technology and are outfitted with many luxurious materials. Key features include a large climate control screen on the console, similar to what can be found in the Porsche Taycan, as well as a single panoramic screen for the dashboard and infotainment system. There are also two wireless charging pads for phones, cup holders, and several accessories, including a table and a large area for wireless charging, where devices or even reading lamps can be placed.

“We are delighted to introduce Presented by MG Motor to the Australian market, setting a new flag for luxurious electric driving,” said MG Motor Australia CEO Peter Ciao. “With advanced innovations wrapped in elegant design, both IM5 and IM6 deliver an unwavering mix of performance, refinement, and range, offering drivers the freedom to go further in absolute comfort. This is the future of premium electric mobility, and we are proud to bring it to Australia and further enhance our offering to Australian drivers.”
