The Nissan company is preparing to expand its presence in Australia, where for many years the only pickup has been the Navara model. However, the situation is now changing: the updated version of Navara has recently been introduced, and soon it will be joined by another model – the Frontier Pro, which will be manufactured in China.
Technical Specifications and Competitors
The new Navara alone will not be able to fully compete with the growing number of hybrid pickups, so Nissan decided to add the Frontier Pro to its portfolio. This model, developed in collaboration with Dongfeng, requires adaptation for right-hand drive before appearing in Australian dealerships.
Market Prospects
In the Australian market, the Frontier Pro will become part of the trend towards increasing the supply of hybrid pickups. For example, the BYD Shark 6 is already one of the leaders, and GWM and Ford have also introduced their models. In the near future, new products from Chery and JAC are expected, indicating active expansion of the segment.
Features of the Frontier Pro
The model is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that works in tandem with an electric motor integrated into the transmission. Thanks to this, it achieves 402 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. The electric range is 84 miles, which matches competitor figures. Additionally, the pickup has a vehicle-to-load function, the ability to tow up to 3,500 kg, and an electromechanical locking differential for improved off-road capability.
I don’t see any problems with this model working in parallel with the new Navara. The question is whether the business case will justify itself. Adaptation for right-hand drive takes about six months. I think it could work for the market.
Interior and Additional Features
The Frontier Pro’s interior is executed in a modern style, similar to the BYD Shark 6. It is equipped with a 10-inch digital instrument panel and a 14.6-inch multimedia system screen. There is also a two-spoke steering wheel, interior lighting, and front seats with heating, ventilation, and massage options.
Nissan Oceania manager Andrew Humberstone noted that adding the Frontier Pro to the lineup will help offset emissions from the diesel Navara, which is an important step in the context of environmental requirements. He also emphasized that the model could effectively complement the brand’s market offering.
The introduction of the Frontier Pro in Australia reflects the general trend of automakers expanding their lines of more environmentally friendly vehicles. It also demonstrates how global brands like Nissan are adapting to local markets by collaborating with regional manufacturers to meet demand.
