New special edition from VW — for four-legged friends

Volkswagen and KONG have joined forces to release a limited series of dog toys inspired by the ID. Buzz model. This toy costs $13.99, and for each one purchased, another is donated to an animal shelter. The KONG dog toys were inspired by the rubber bumpers from the 1960s Volkswagen Type 2 Bus. A few years ago, we told our readers about Joe Markham and his German shepherd named Fritz.

Markham owned an auto repair shop in downtown Denver and was working on a late 1960s Volkswagen Type 2 Bus when he suddenly heard Fritz start going crazy. He went to investigate and saw the dog chewing on a rubber bumper, enjoying life. It turned out to be a perfect toy because the rubber was strong enough to withstand repeated chewing while not damaging Fritz’s teeth. This led to a six-year journey during which Markham refined the “rubber compound, size, and shape” of what became the KONG Classic Dog Toy. It was launched in 1976, and since then, millions of units have been sold.

Volkswagen and KONG have now teamed up to create a special dog toy inspired by history. With the idea of celebrating National Puppy Day and the shared history between the companies, the toy features an appealing blue pig design and unique packaging. Only a limited number of units are available, and prices start at $13.99 before taxes and an $8.95 shipping fee. For each one, Volkswagen, KONG, and VCA Charities will donate another to a local shelter. Additionally, 100% of the net proceeds will go to VCA Charities and its network of shelters across the country.

This is good news for everyone, says Rachel Zaluzec from Volkswagen, “This collaboration continues the great story of KONG’s inception, which began with a man, his best friend, and a bus.” She added, “We are excited to partner with KONG and VCA Charities to expand this connection to those who need it most, ensuring more dogs experience the love and joy they deserve.”
