Audi has introduced the new generation of the A6L sedan, created specifically for the Chinese market. This model has grown significantly in size and occupies an intermediate position between the business class and full-size luxury cars. Despite the updates and enlargement, the car is offered at a lower starting price than its predecessor.
Exterior and Dimensions
The new A6L has inherited the aggressive design language of the global A6 version, but its proportions have changed. The body length has increased by 143 mm, reaching 5142 mm. Most of this increase went to the rear passengers thanks to a wheelbase of 3066 mm. This is 68 mm more than the standard A8, although still 62 mm less than the long-wheelbase A8L version.
The most obvious sign of the long-wheelbase version is the enlarged rear doors. Audi has also made a number of smaller adjustments to the front: the radiator grille has received a new pattern, and an LED strip frames the illuminated brand logo. Metallic inserts now flow into the headlight units, making the design more refined.
Aluminum-look trim has appeared on the lower part of the bumper, continuing along the sills and wrapping around the rear diffuser. In the S-Line version, the exterior receives darker accents, bringing it closer to the look of the American A6 version, as well as unique 21-inch alloy wheels created with “Eastern aesthetics” in mind.
Interior and Comfort
The A6L’s interior is focused on comfort, especially for rear-seat passengers. The car has received seats specially developed for China, optimized for long journeys. Overhead is a huge panoramic roof with an area of 1.96 square meters, equipped with 112 RGB LEDs for setting atmospheric lighting at night. The audio system is represented by a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen acoustic system.
Screens dominate the dashboard design. In front of the driver is an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster, in the center is a 14.5-inch multimedia system display, and an additional screen for the front passenger. A large head-up display projects key information directly into the driver’s field of view.
In terms of safety, the A6L is equipped with 33 sensors, including two lidar modules, as well as the Huawei Qiankun intelligent driving system. In addition to 28 driver assistance functions, the sedan has 7+2 airbags, semi-concealed door handles with dual electromechanical protection, a folding hood, and shock-absorbing elements in the bumpers.
Technical Specifications and Powertrains
Like the standard A6, the A6L model is built on the PPC architecture. The base turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with a mild-hybrid system develops 201 hp and is paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and front-wheel drive. A more powerful version of the same engine produces 268 hp and can be equipped with a 24-hp electric motor and quattro all-wheel drive.
The flagship turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 with 362 hp is standardly paired with a 24-hp electric motor and quattro all-wheel drive. The long-wheelbase sedan is also offered with an all-wheel steering system that reduces the turning radius, and an air suspension with the ability to adjust ground clearance by 30 mm.
Pricing Policy and Market Context
The new A6L starts from 323,000 yuan for the base version with the 2.0-liter engine. The top version with the 3.0-liter V6 and quattro drive is priced at 436,000 yuan. Compared to the previous A6L model that debuted in 2018, the new model is 104,900 yuan cheaper. Its price is also significantly lower than the A8L, which starts from 789,800 yuan.
Compared to Audi models for North America, the A6L looks particularly advantageous. Its base price is $17,100 lower than the price of the entry-level A6, and it costs less than half the price of the outdated A8.
This pricing policy reflects fierce competition from Chinese brands, which has impacted Audi’s sales decline in the region. Like its predecessor, the new A6L will be produced locally by the FAW-Audi joint venture. Although China does not receive the A6 Avant wagon, it will soon be joined by a lower and more stylish long-wheelbase wagon called the A7L.
For clarity, the table below shows the dimensional sizes of the corresponding A6 and A8 models.
| Model | Length | Wheelbase |
| Current A6 (USA/EU) | 4,999 mm | 2,927 mm |
| Previous A6L (China) | 5,050 mm | 3,024 mm |
| New Audi A6L (China) | 5,142 mm | 3,066 mm |
| Audi A8 | 5,190 mm | 2,998 mm |
| Audi A8 L | 5,320 mm | 3,128 mm |
The presentation of the Audi A6L for China demonstrates the brand’s clear strategy to adapt to the specifics of the local market. The increase in size, emphasis on rear passenger comfort, and integration of advanced technologies from local suppliers such as Huawei are a direct response to the demands of Chinese consumers. At the same time, the price reduction, despite the updates, indicates pressure from rapidly growing local electric vehicle and premium brands. A similar approach – creating specialized, long-wheelbase versions for China – is becoming increasingly common among European automakers seeking to maintain their share in the world’s largest automotive market.
