Problem with the Sunroof in the New Audi Q3

The 2026 newcomer, the Audi Q3, has already been subjected to a large-scale recall campaign in the USA and Canada due to a malfunction of the panoramic sunroof. Although the problem does not concern the key mechanical components of the car, it violates federal safety standards.

Essence of the Defect and Its Discovery

As reported by the manufacturer, the cause is a software error in the sunroof control unit. Specifically, the target data container of this unit was incorrectly programmed, leading to the sunroof closing function potentially not meeting safety requirements.

Audi notes that the defect may increase the risk of injury to passengers, however, the exact nature of the non-compliance with standards is not disclosed.

Importantly, the potential problem was discovered during Audi’s internal testing phase in early February, before the vehicles reached customers. The manufacturer emphasizes that no accidents, fires, injuries, or deaths related to this malfunction have been recorded.

Scale of the Recall and Resolution Plan

In total, the campaign affects 6,077 vehicles in the USA and 1,336 in Canada, manufactured from November 2025 through March 2026. Owners of the affected crossovers will receive notifications starting from the end of May.

Dealerships have received instructions for installing updated software for the sunroof control unit. Additionally, the user manual will be updated to describe the operation of the sunroof with the corrected software.

Context of the Model’s Market Launch

The new generation Q3 appeared in American showrooms only in the first quarter of 2026. Currently, the model is available only in one S Line Quattro trim with a 2.0-liter turbo engine producing 255 horsepower. The starting price, excluding delivery, is $43,700.

Such incidents remind us of how dependent modern cars are on software code, where even a minor error in a non-core component, such as a sunroof, can lead to serious measures. The rapid discovery of the problem by the manufacturer itself, before receiving complaints from customers, is a positive signal regarding quality control systems. However, the very fact of recalling a new model at the start of sales always affects its reputation. For potential buyers, this is also an opportunity to ensure that the official dealer will provide all necessary support for rectifying the defect without unnecessary complications.
