After a successful start with its first electric models, Rivian is preparing to enter the mass market. The R2 model, introduced in March of last year, is set to become a more affordable alternative in the brand’s lineup. Although the car was initially shown as a concept, only now has it been spotted for the first time during real-world testing.
This model could be crucial for Rivian, marking the company’s transition from niche solutions to the mass market.
Unconventional Approach to Camouflage
Rivian has always been distinguished by an unusual approach, and this prototype is no exception. Instead of the traditional black-and-white camouflage wrap, the company used a unique design featuring images of trees and lakes.
Such camouflage attracts attention but practically does not hide the general body shapes of the R2. The design of the prototype is almost identical to the concept presented earlier, with Rivian’s characteristic LED panels and sturdy bumpers.
Technical Features
One of the interesting details is the rear window, which lowers just like the side windows. This feature will likely be serial. The car also received new black wheels with BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain off-road tires, giving it a more aggressive look.
The R2 will be offered in versions with one, two, or three electric motors, and the top model will be able to travel over 300 miles on a single charge. Production will begin at the company’s plant in Illinois.
Given the growing competition in the electric SUV market, the success of the R2 could determine Rivian’s future fate. The company is betting on a unique design and functionality aimed at outdoor enthusiasts, which could become its competitive advantage.
