BMW has unveiled a previously unknown M3 Compact prototype. This hot hatch was built as a one-off because it was decided not to release it into series production.

As you know, the BMW M3 E36 was produced in coupe, convertible, and sedan bodies. However, the engineers of the Bavarian brand turned their attention to the BMW 3 Compact hatchback. The fact is that it was the lightest among all BMW 3 E36 models – 150 kg lighter than the coupe.

Under the hood, a standard 3.2-liter S50B32 inline-six engine with 321 hp was installed. It is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The suspension, steering, and brakes were also borrowed from the regular BMW M3 E36. The interior was trimmed with Alcantara and even sports seats with a carbon frame were installed.

The result was a small rocket, and the developers were very pleased with the hatchback. However, everyone understood perfectly well that the BMW M3 Compact would likely not have many buyers, so the project had to be closed.
