Initially, the ZAZ-1102 “Tavria” was supposed to have a completely different appearance. The development of a promising and affordable Ukrainian car began in the late 60s, but the project was postponed for almost 20 years.
On the Internet, they showed how the famous ZAZ-1102 “Tavria” was supposed to look. The prototype of the front-wheel-drive sedan was created in the early 70s. This is reported by Focus. In the late 60s, the development of a promising model began at the Zaporizhzhia Automobile Plant, which was to replace the outdated ZAZ-968. The project was headed by the new chief architect of ZAZ, Volodymyr Steshenko. In the early 70s, the first prototype of the two-door sedan “Tavria” was built. Its design resembled cars of VAZ and Volvo of those years.

The main feature of the project was the front-wheel-drive platform. At that time, most cars in the USSR were produced with rear-wheel drive. Several prototypes of the “Tavria” in sedan body were made. One of them had rectangular headlights, and the other had round ones.
