First Price Hike in Two Years for Tesla Model Y Does Not Affect the Cheapest Version

Prices for three versions of the Tesla Model Y in the US have increased. The changes affect the Premium RWD, Premium AWD, and Performance trims. At the same time, an extended six-seat version of the Model Y L may enter the market.

Model Y Price Hike: Which Versions Have Become More Expensive

The Model Y remains the undisputed leader among electric vehicles in the US, significantly outpacing competitors. Last year, over 357,000 units were sold, five times more than the sales volume of the Chevy Equinox EV, which became the most popular non-Tesla electric vehicle. However, there is unpleasant news for potential buyers.

Although the price increase is relatively small, it may prompt some customers to consider other options. The base versions of the Model Y RWD and AWD still start at $39,990 and $41,990, respectively. However, the mid-range Premium RWD trim has risen by $1,000 to $45,990, representing a 2.2 percent increase.

Tesla has applied the same $1,000 increase to the Premium AWD, which now costs $48,990, and has also raised the price of the Model Y Performance from $57,490 to $57,990. All prices do not include delivery fees and local taxes.

Is a Launch of the Six-Seat Model Y L in the Works?

In typical Tesla fashion, the company has provided no explanation for the price increase. These changes are not accompanied by a model update, which other automakers usually cite. This is the first price hike for the Model Y since 2024, and it remains below the current annual inflation rate of 3.8 percent.

The Model Y lineup in the US may soon expand with the launch of the three-row Model Y L. This model was initially introduced in China and later appeared in the markets of the UK and Australia. A prototype of the six-seat Model Y was recently spotted during testing on US roads, which may indicate an imminent local launch. If the model does appear on the American market, its price will likely start slightly above $50,000.

The price adjustment, although minor, occurs against the backdrop of intensifying competition in the electric vehicle market. Many manufacturers are offering more aggressive pricing strategies and discounts to attract buyers. At the same time, the arrival of the six-seat version could become a powerful trump card for Tesla, as it would fill the need for a family electric vehicle with greater capacity, which has been a weak spot in the company’s lineup. Therefore, the small price increase on individual trims may be part of preparations for expanding the model range and strengthening positions in various market segments.
