Few people know that the Porsche 928 was designed to replace the 911 model. In the ’70s, its sales declined, and the management of Porsche was already disappointed with the rear-engine layout. However, the debut of the Porsche 911 Turbo renewed public interest in the model.
Its development continued, and the 928 became a luxurious alternative to the 911. 
The key market for the Porsche 928 was the USA, so instead of a flat-six, a 4.5 L V8 engine (a typo on the insert) with a power of 240 hp was installed under the hood. With it, the Porsche coupe reached 230 km/h. 
An automatic transmission was also available. By the way, the gearbox was located in the rear along with the main drive (transaxle layout): this achieved equal weight distribution across the axles.
The avant-garde design belongs to Anatole Lapine. Of course, the retractable round headlights immediately attract attention. Although there were other interesting solutions such as the first integrated bumpers in the world. 
The Porsche 928 was more spacious than the 911 and had a decent trunk, and its suspension was made softer. The configuration included power steering, air conditioning, cruise control, and power seats.
The model was constantly updated. By the early ’90s, the engine volume increased to 5.4 L: power grew to 345 hp, and the top speed to 275 km/h. The equipment was supplemented with ABS, airbags, traction control, and an onboard computer. 
A total of 61,000 Porsche 928 coupes were produced by 1995. The immortal 911 easily outlived the model that was meant to replace it.
