In May, just over 24.2 thousand cars were sold in Russia compared to 147.3 thousand in May 2021. This is due to almost all foreign companies stopping their car imports to the country, and Russian factories (having) suspended their operations.

Among the brands that continue to supply cars to Russia from abroad, only the Chinese remain. Regarding the most popular models, the number 1 model in Russia became the Lada Granta. However, even “locally-made” cars have significantly lost ground – in the last month of spring, 2,305 Granta cars were sold, which is 5.6 times less than last year’s figures. In 2nd place is the Lada Vesta (1,538 cars of this model, 6.5 times less). In 3rd place is the Kia Rio – 1,202 cars, which can be considered the remaining stocks (a decrease of 5.6 times).

It is worth noting separately that the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant (UAZ) recently came under targeted restrictive measures by the West – the enterprise was included in the sixth package of stringent EU anti-Russian sanctions. The reason is that it supplies the Russian armed forces with Patriot off-road vehicles, which in turn are used in the war in Ukraine.
