Rivian R2 Performance Specifications
New data from EPA certification provides a clearer picture of the upcoming Rivian R2 electric crossover. The Performance model, which will be the first to hit the market, will feature an 86.8 kWh battery and offer a choice of wheels.
Range and Weight Details
The range significantly depends on the wheel configuration. Versions with 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires will receive an estimated 314 miles, while models with 21-inch lightweight tires will be able to travel up to 335 miles. This figure surpasses the result of its main competitor—the Tesla Model Y Performance. However, the R2 Performance is heavier: its weight with 21-inch wheels is 2381 kg, which is 356 kg more than the Tesla.
Technological Features of the New Model
Rivian engineers developed their own heat pump system for the R2. It is designed to improve cabin climate control efficiency in hot weather and reduce noise levels. For cold climates, a high-voltage liquid heater in the cooling system is provided. The crossover will also feature a built-in battery health monitoring system.
Plans for Other R2 Modifications
The first to hit the market will be the more expensive Performance version starting at $57,990. Later this year, the appearance of a more affordable R2 Premium modification with a starting price of $53,990 is expected. Its powertrain will deliver 450 hp and 727 Nm, and the range, according to preliminary estimates, is expected to exceed that of the top version. In 2027, the launch of the base Standard version with 350 hp and an estimated range of 345 miles is planned. The lineup is set to be completed by the most affordable model with a smaller battery and a range of about 275 miles.
The R2 is a key model for Rivian, as it expands the brand’s presence in the market for more affordable electric SUVs. Its technical characteristics, especially the range, demonstrate significant progress compared to existing competitor offerings. The success of this model could significantly impact the company’s financial stability and help it solidify its position in the segment, which is currently growing rapidly. Further differentiation in price and specifications will allow it to reach a wider range of buyers.
