2028 Lexus RX Prototype Shows the Most Important Update — a Giant Screen

The updated Lexus RX was spotted during a test drive. Four years after the debut of the fifth generation, it’s time for a planned update. Spy photos confirm that Lexus is working on this, although the changes are very subtle at first glance.

Exterior Changes: Front-End Updates

A white prototype of the mid-size SUV was spotted during testing on the Nürburgring and surrounding roads. The key detail is the camouflage, or rather, where it is absent. Only the front part is covered. Everything behind is fully exposed.

Obviously, the camouflage on the front covers an updated grille. It’s hard to tell exactly how it will differ from the previous model, but the pattern may be slightly different. Additionally, the lower part of the bumper and the air intakes may also be changed.

Interestingly, the headlights of the current RX were retained on this test mule, although it is possible they will also be revised by the time the updated model hits the market. Changes to the taillights and rear bumper are also possible, even if they are not present on this example.

Interior: The Main Change Is the Screen

More significant changes will likely occur inside the cabin. While the current RX has a central multimedia screen stylishly integrated into the dashboard and connected to the instrument cluster, photos taken through the windshield of this prototype show it will have a simpler, freestanding screen similar to the one installed in the new ES and the larger TZ.

Other elements shared with the TZ are expected. For example, a volume knob may appear below the screen, along with touch-sensitive surfaces on the dashboard for temperature control. A new steering wheel and a digital instrument cluster can also be expected.

Technical Side: No Surprises

No major changes are expected on the mechanical side. The current engine lineup will most likely remain unchanged. This means the 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine producing 275 hp and 430 Nm of torque in standard form, and up to 366 hp and 461 Nm in the RX 500h F Sport variant, will stay. The hybrid RX 350h and plug-in hybrid RX 450h+ will also likely continue, each with a 2.5-liter engine.

The unveiling of the updated Lexus RX is expected within the next year, and it is quite possible that it will be introduced as a 2028 model in North America.

The Lexus RX update is a logical step to maintain the model’s competitiveness in the premium crossover segment. The main focus appears to be on modernizing the interior and bringing it in line with the brand’s newer models, such as the TZ. The exterior changes remain minimal, which is a typical strategy for Lexus, allowing it to preserve the model’s recognizability. The lack of changes to the powertrain suggests that the current engines and hybrid systems still meet market demands and environmental regulations. Thus, the updated RX should become more technological and modern without losing its key qualities.
