Ram 2500 surpasses Silverado HD and Ford Super Duty in power

2027 Ram HD lineup updates: new capabilities and style

On New Year’s Day, Ram announced that the 2027 Power Wagon will finally receive the 6.7-liter Cummins turbo-diesel producing 430 hp (321 kW) and 1,456 Nm of torque. Fans have long requested a diesel version, and it will arrive on the market with a starting price of $88,470 including destination.

First heavy-duty pursuit pickup in the U.S.

A few months later, the company introduced the 2500 Emergency Response Vehicle. It is the first heavy-duty pickup in the U.S. capable of police pursuits. It is powered by a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 engine producing 405 hp (302 kW) and 581 Nm of torque. This allows the model to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8.4 seconds, with a top speed of 103 mph (166 km/h).

Other updates: payload and options

While these are the biggest news for 2027, Ram also detailed other changes. They are relatively minor, but customers can expect improved payload capacity, some styling updates, and expanded options.

Starting with capabilities: regular cab and crew cab (with 6-foot-4-inch bed) versions of the 3500 4×4 SRW with the 6.4L Hemi V8 engine receive higher payload capacity and increased gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR). Both figures increased by 181 kg, and the GVWR now stands at 5,189 kg.

Most versions of the 2500 model with the 6.4-liter V8 engine can be equipped with a new payload upgrade package. It costs $835 and includes a “frame from the 3500, leaf springs, and locking rear differential.” This appears to be a good value: the package raises the GVWR from 4,536 kg to 5,008 kg, providing a best-in-class payload of 2,077 kg.

Style and new colors

As for design, changes are few, but V8-powered models now feature “Protest Symbol” badges on the front fenders. Two new colors have also been added: Serrano Green Metallic and Tank Clear-Coat.

Changes do not stop there: the Sport Appearance and Night Edition packages are now more widely available, and the sport hood is now available as a standalone option for Rebel and Power Wagon models. Incidentally, for the Rebel and Power Wagon, the Warn electric winch is now offered separately, without the need to order the Level 1 Equipment Group package.

For the budget-oriented Tradesman trim, the locking rear differential becomes a standalone option, while the luxurious Laramie receives new optional body-color wheel arch extenders and expanded availability of the RamBox system.

Context and summary

These updates indicate that Ram aims to solidify its leadership in the heavy-duty pickup segment by offering both long-awaited diesel versions and specialized models like the police vehicle. Although the changes in the 2027 lineup are not revolutionary, they subtly improve key characteristics — payload, customization, and practicality. Particularly noteworthy is the Payload Upgrade Package for the 2500, which, for a relatively small price increase, allows achieving best-in-class figures. This makes the Ram 2500 even more attractive for those who need maximum payload without stepping up to a full 3500 model. Additionally, the expanded availability of options such as the winch or sport hood demonstrates attention to customer wishes, allowing them to tailor the vehicle to their needs without being tied to expensive packages.
