Presentation of the New Division
Rivian introduced its special division, Rivian Adventure Department, abbreviated as RAD, during the FAT Ice Race event in Montana. This team is described as a union of designers, engineers, and enthusiasts who explore the limits of Rivian vehicle capabilities.
RAD’s Philosophy and Practice
The company stated that the team is focused on unlocking a new level of capability and performance. They are not confined to office work, emphasizing that there is no substitute for real-world experience. This approach has already yielded results: Rivian won the 2023 Rebelle Rally and set records for production electric pickups at Pikes Peak in 2023 and 2024. Knowledge gained during these events is integrated into road-going models.
While the idea of winning races to boost sales is not new, Rivian claims that their adventure drives directly led to the creation of the Desert Rally drive mode and the RAD Tuner tool. The latter debuted in the second generation of the R1 Quad lineup and allows owners to customize their driving experience.

Unique Customization Capabilities
While many automakers offer personalization features, most allow adjustment of only a few parameters. In contrast, Rivian provides drivers with the ability to change acceleration, braking regeneration, damping, ride height, brake assist, steering feel, wheel slip, and torque vectoring. Essentially, this allows for precise tuning of the vehicle’s characteristics according to your preferences and the specific road situation.
The Future of the Division
The Rivian Adventure Department has existed for some time but is now operating openly. As explained by Chief Designer Jeff Hammoud, RAD embodies the passion that defines Rivian. This drive for exploration, pushing boundaries, and the spirit of adventure is the DNA of the entire company, from designers to the owner community.
RAD represents a living expression of the passion that defines Rivian. This drive to explore, push boundaries, and embrace adventure is not something confined to one team; it is the very DNA of our entire company, from designers and engineers to our community of owners.
The main question is what comes next. Will RAD remain a relatively small team focused on refining existing products, or will it transform into an analogue of divisions like BMW M, Cadillac V, or Mercedes-AMG? Only time will tell, but for now, it seems like a marketing move.
The creation of RAD is a logical step for a brand building its identity around adventure and innovation. A focus on real-world testing off the asphalt could give Rivian unique competitive advantages in the EV market, especially among buyers who value autonomy and off-road capability. The success of this initiative will depend on how quickly and effectively technologies developed in “leather-lined laboratories” find their way into production vehicles, making them not only eco-friendly but also uncompromisingly capable in any conditions.
