The whole of Britain plunged into 30 days of mourning, as Prince Philip – Duke of Edinburgh and husband of Queen Elizabeth II – passed away. He was famous for his naval service during World War II, his sparkling British humor, and his love for cars.
As early as 1939, Philip was cruising around London with his future wife in a sporty MG. He tried dozens, if not hundreds, of cars and enjoyed getting behind the wheel even in his 90s. TopGir selected the most interesting and vivid cars of Prince Philip.
Lagonda 3 Litre
This 140-horsepower convertible was specially built to order for the prince in 1954. He loved the car and often drove his family in it.
Alvis TD21
The Alvis replaced the Lagonda. It was slightly less powerful (115 hp), but it did receive disc brakes. However, they didn’t help much when the prince was involved in a car accident in 1967.
Jaguar XKSS
The Duke of Edinburgh appreciated the limited-edition Jaguar – the world’s first supercar. Incidentally, this is the road version of the Le Mans Jaguar D-Type, and only 16 of these 262-horsepower roadsters were produced.
Aston Martin DB3S
Prince Philip was offered the chance to drive a car for Le Mans. Carroll Shelby raced in one of these at the time.
Fiat 500
The aristocrat was not averse to testing not only sports cars but also the popular miniature Fiat 500.
Land Rover
Special Land Rovers were created specifically for the royal family’s travels to hard-to-reach places. Although ordinary Defenders were also frequently used.
Morris Bus
In 1960, Prince Philip drove his wife in a school bus Morris.
Double-Decker Bus Leyland
Even a London double-decker bus was no problem for the Duke of Edinburgh.
Chieftain Tank
In 1969, during a visit to the Bovington training ground, Philip became a mechanic-driver of a Chieftain tank.
Jaguar
There were always Jaguars of different models in the royal family’s garage.
Land Rover Freelander
It was in this SUV that Prince Philip had an accident in 2019. At that moment, he was 97 years old!
