The Most Popular Car Colors of 2021

American company Axalta Coating Systems, which supplies automotive paints, conducted a traditional study of the most popular colors this past year.

The white color among automotive colors worldwide has held the first place for 10 years, but the demand for it is gradually decreasing. Meanwhile, interest in gray paint is rapidly increasing: it has already become as popular as black and has even surpassed white in Europe, becoming the leader in the local ranking.

The study states that 35 percent of all new cars are painted white. The same shares – 19 percent each – belong to black and gray cars, with the number of the latter having grown by four percent compared to 2020. Silver and blue paints occupy the fourth and fifth places with results of nine and eight percent respectively, followed by red (five percent), brown/beige (three percent), and green and yellow (one percent each) shades. The rest scored less than one percent.

White had the greatest popularity in 2017, when 39 percent of all new cars were painted in it. This year it lost three percent overall, and as much as seven percent in the world’s largest car market – China.

Europe is the only region where gray new cars dominate with a share of 27%. Silver cars are most popular in South America (23 percent), and black cars again in Europe (22 percent), where they lead in the luxury segment. Red cars most frequently hit the roads in North America, capturing 8% of the market.
