Chase on California Highways
There have been many instances where drivers fleeing from police have driven over spike strips but still not stopped, sometimes even continuing on rims. However, late last week, a California Highway Patrol officer successfully deployed such strips, forcing the driver to stop and surrender.
Beginning of the Incident
The pursuit began on Thursday morning when an unknown person stole a white pickup truck used for traffic control. The vehicle still had a flashing arrow board on its roof, and the bed was loaded with construction equipment and bright orange cones. Clearly, the person who stole it wasn’t overly concerned with remaining inconspicuous.

Escape Route
Police began pursuing the vehicle on the 5 Freeway in the San Fernando Valley and then continued onto the 14 Freeway, heading toward Santa Clarita.
Successful Spike Strip Deployment
Footage released by the California Highway Patrol’s Antelope Valley office on Instagram shows an officer hiding behind a concrete barrier as the stolen pickup approaches. He quickly throws a spike strip onto the road, and the truck drives right over it. Within seconds, numerous police vehicles pursuing the pickup appear in the frame.
Stop and Arrest
According to local media, at least one tire on the stolen truck was completely shredded. Shortly thereafter, the driver stopped near the Kern and Los Angeles county line, undoubtedly realizing that escaping in a slow-moving truck with a damaged tire was a hopeless endeavor.
Reports indicate the female driver was ordered to throw the keys out the window, which she did, after which she was taken into custody.

Similar incidents involving the use of specialized equipment to stop fleeing suspects highlight the importance of law enforcement’s technical capabilities. The successful deployment of spike strips in this case helped minimize risks to other road users and quickly end the pursuit without serious consequences. It also demonstrates how ineffective an attempt to escape can be in an unprepared or highly vulnerable vehicle, especially one that is clearly identifiable on the road.
