The good old Def was produced with no major external changes for almost half a century. And while the similarly boxy Gelandewagen retained the traditional features of its predecessor even in the latest generation, the new Defender 2020 has changed beyond recognition.
But to what extent has it lost off-road capabilities, and has it lost them at all? Carwow conducted an experiment comparing the old and new Def, not so much on rough terrain. In fact, the comparison touched not so much on off-road capabilities as on “towing” abilities. Journalists decided to compare SUVs from different generations in an exercise like a tug of war.
The participants were long-wheelbase versions – the old Defender with a 2.2-liter turbo diesel producing 122 hp (360 Nm), and the new Land Rover with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel producing 240 hp and 430 Nm.
Is the comparison fair? A rhetorical question, but still intriguing:
