Tuning a ZAZ with an engine replacement is not uncommon. Moreover, the engines installed in Zaporozhets vary greatly – from VAZ to Toyota. But this time, the eared ZAZ-968 was equipped with a Subaru boxer engine.
The Subarozhets project was not brought to life immediately, and it required two ZAZ cars (one crashed during testing). The two-liter Subaru EJ202 engine is known from the Forester and Legacy.
The gearbox was borrowed from a diesel VW Transporter. Interestingly, the power unit was installed on the native Zaporozhets subframe. The main problem was cooling since the Subaru engine is not designed for rear installation.
That’s why the eared ZAZ-968 with air intakes was chosen, and the engine was complemented with two miniature radiators from a Smart. The drives were taken from a VW Golf II, and the steering rack from a BMW.
VAZ disc brakes were also added. The result is a rear-engine sports car with a boxer engine – almost a Porsche. The creators predict it accelerates to a hundred in about 7 seconds.
