Tesla is likely developing a six-seat version of the updated Model Y Juniper crossover. This modification may appear alongside the already existing five- and seven-seat variants. There are also rumors that the new model will receive an extended wheelbase and separate second-row seats.
The Model Y has always been one of Tesla’s most popular cars, and last year it even became the global sales leader. The updated version brought changes to the design and interior, and now the manufacturer seems to be preparing even more configuration options. Information about the six-seat version was discovered by the well-known Tesla software researcher Green, who found relevant references in the code of the latest firmware version.
The much-discussed six-seat Model Y has appeared in the firmware. It is unlikely to be for China only, as some had speculated.
Will there be an extended version?
The six-seat layout involves a 2+2+2 arrangement, where the second row will receive separate seats, like in the more expensive Model X. This should improve space and comfort for passengers. Furthermore, in China, there are already rumors of a 15 cm longer wheelbase for this version, which would allow for more legroom in the second and third rows.
If Tesla really launches such a modification, it could significantly expand the Model Y’s audience, especially among family buyers looking for more comfort. It is worth noting that in the case of the Model X, the six-seat version was the most expensive, so a similar approach can be expected here.
