Tesla is not selling Robotaxis — these are not ordinary Model Ys

Tesla Robotaxi: Modified Model Ys for Safety

Tesla has begun testing its Robotaxi service, but with an unexpected nuance. Although Elon Musk has repeatedly stated that regular Model Ys are used for autonomous taxis, new data indicates special modifications. The Halo program includes additional safety measures, such as self-cleaning cameras, reinforced protection for optics, and a dual telecommunications system for remote monitoring.

These changes may cause controversy: on one hand, they increase the reliability of autonomous rides; on the other, they contradict statements about their identity to production models. However, the key point remains that passengers receive additional safety guarantees. Some users have already shared their experience:

In the last 36 hours, I have taken 20 Robotaxi rides (92 miles) without any issues. The impression is one of smoothness and comfort.

Technical Features and Future

Dual telematics and protected cameras are a logical step for a system that relies on visual data. These solutions may also appear in civilian Model Ys, especially considering successful scenarios of interaction with other autonomous vehicles:

The Tesla Robotaxi skillfully handled a situation where a Waymo occupied the wrong lane. Reports of such episodes are unlikely to make it into the media.

For now, the service remains experimental, but its development could change the market. Unlike its competitors, Tesla is betting on the gradual improvement of existing models rather than creating separate platforms. This opens a path to scaling the technology without radical costs.
