Volkswagen Golf is the undisputed leader of the C-class and its founder. Since 1974, over 35 million Golfs have been produced, and now it’s time for its eighth generation. In Europe, a number of media have already tested the new Golf 8, and based on their evaluations, we can form an objective opinion about the car.
Volkswagen Golf 8 retains its familiar silhouette but is immediately recognizable by its fresh face with thin LED headlights. In general, there are no revolutions in design, and the MQB platform is inherited from its predecessor.
The hatchback has slightly grown – up to 4284 mm in length and 1789 mm in width with a wheelbase of 2636 mm. Aerodynamics have improved, and the drag coefficient has been reduced to 0.27. By the way, there will no longer be a three-door version.
Inside, following the example of the senior Passat, thin ventilation deflectors appeared. And the plastic has become of better quality.
All VW Golf 8 now have a virtual cockpit, and versions with DSG have an unusual miniature gear selector. The multimedia touchscreen has increased and can reach 10 inches in diagonal. Thanks to it, there are practically no buttons left on the central panel.
The interior space hasn’t changed much and is about the same as the predecessor. The trunk has remained at the same level, with a volume of 380 liters.
The equipment of the 2020 Volkswagen Golf is significantly expanded, as even the basic version now has keyless access, climate control, automatic braking systems, and lane-keeping assistance.
In the top Style version, there is a three-zone climate control, wireless smartphone charging, and adaptive cruise control. For an additional fee, the semi-autonomous driving system Travel Assist, capable of maintaining speeds up to 210 km/h, is available. The 1.5-liter turbo engine with deactivated cylinders still develops 150 hp and 250 Nm. It can now be supplemented with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, which briefly adds 16 hp and 25 Nm, which can be felt during acceleration.
This Golf accelerates to a hundred in 8.5 seconds (without the hybrid system – in 8.5 seconds). The engine is torquey but quite loud, especially after 4000 rpm. Of course, electrification and deactivation of a pair of cylinders help save fuel. Though more economical plug-in hybrids with 204 and 245 hp, as well as 2.0-liter turbo diesels with 115 and 150 hp, will appear in the lineup. The charged VW Golf GTI will be presented in the spring.
The handling of the Volkswagen Golf 8 remains familiar. The steering has become sharper, but in comfort mode, on the contrary, it is too light. The suspension is slightly more resilient than its predecessor’s – especially if you choose the optional adaptive shock absorbers. Otherwise, it’s the familiar Golf – not the softest, but also not the most exciting to drive.
In general, based on the first reviews, one can conclude that the new Volkswagen Golf 8 remains the golden mean in the C-class.
As expected, there were no revolutions. In Germany, the hatchback will go on sale this year, but we will have to wait a few more months.
