In Florida, a conflict between cyclists and a Jeep ended with a shot, but law enforcement is silent about the shooter

Conflict in Cutler Bay: what is known

Each of us lives at a frantic pace. We need to be on time, and sometimes it makes us nervous. However, that is no excuse to take out frustration on other road users, no matter how inconvenient they may seem. That is something at least one Ford driver in Florida should hear. And that is true regardless of whether he was the one who pulled the trigger in the clash with cyclists.

A group of cyclists in Cutler Bay, Florida, set out for a Saturday ride when a black SUV appeared to suddenly drift toward their group and cut them off. One of the riders hit the vehicle, and then a shot rang out — an ordinary road conflict turned into a much more serious investigation. Authorities have not confirmed that the driver was the one who fired, but let’s consider what we see.

What the video shows

The video appears to have been posted on Facebook on August 22. The camera is attached to a bicycle moving as part of a large group in Miami. As the group passes an intersection, we hear a car horn. A moment later, a Ford SUV appears next to the group, but instead of simply passing the cyclists, the driver slows down. Then, as the riders keep to the right side of the lane, the Ford driver, clearly ready to cross the double solid line, matches the speed of one of the cyclists and begins to move toward him.

There are no oncoming cars ahead. It looks like the vehicle is being deliberately aimed at a vulnerable cyclist. At the end of the maneuver, the Ford driver even stops in front of another cyclist, and he shouts and, it seems, hits the SUV’s rearview mirror. That is when things get truly crazy.

The shot and testimony

The camera angle shows the ground to the right of both participants in the conflict — and it is there that the dirt can be seen kicking up from a bullet that apparently struck the ground.

“When the car pulled up next to the cyclist in yellow, the driver aimed a pistol at him,” says the person who recorded the video.

According to NBC Miami:

“Sheriff’s officials said the shot was fired into the ground, but did not say whether the driver or one of the cyclists fired.”

What the law says

The reality here is quite simple. In Florida, cyclists are allowed to ride two abreast. Drivers are legally required to treat them the same as any other vehicle. And frankly, there is no normal road situation in which displaying a weapon and firing a shot would be justified. We will follow this story and let you know if police announce charges.

This incident is yet another reminder of the constant tension between motorists and cyclists in Florida. The state, which attracts thousands of cycling tourists every year, is also known for road conflicts that often take a dangerous turn. Local activists have repeatedly called on authorities to take tougher measures against drivers who behave aggressively around cyclists. So far, no arrest has been made in this case, but the very fact that a shot was fired in the middle of a residential area makes one wonder: how far can an ordinary road dispute go?
