New Electric Vehicle Incentive Program in Italy
Italy has introduced a unique incentive program that makes some electric vehicles incredibly affordable for specific population categories. If they meet the criteria, buyers can receive a discount of up to €11,000, which significantly reduces the cost of new electric cars.
Bonus Eligibility Conditions
The program is designed for low-income families living in cities with a population of over 50,000 people. To receive the full discount, it is necessary to:
Families with an income up to €40,000 can expect a discount of €9,000. The program also provides benefits for small businesses – a compensation of 30% of the electric vehicle’s cost with a limit of up to €20,000.
The Most Affordable Models
After applying the bonus, the prices for electric vehicles become particularly attractive:
- Dacia Spring – from €3,900
- Leapmotor T03 – from €4,900
The base trim Dacia Spring Essential Electric 45 is equipped with a 44 hp engine and a 26.8 kWh battery, providing a range of 225 km.
Other Available Models
The program also provides discounts on other electric vehicles:
- Fiat 500e – from €9,950
- Fiat Grande Panda electric – from €11,950
- Citroen e-C3 – from €12,900
- Citroen e-C3 Aircross SUV – from €15,790
Program Prospects
The total budget of the initiative is €597 million, and the goal is to sell at least 39,000 electric vehicles by June 2026. Currently, the share of electric cars in the Italian market is only 5.2%, which is significantly lower than the European average of 15.8%.
Although the offered prices look very attractive, the strict selection criteria limit the pool of potential buyers. The success of this program will largely depend on whether it can not only temporarily boost sales but also promote a long-term transition to electric transport among broad segments of the population. A particularly important aspect is that the program focuses on urban residents, where air quality problems are most acute and charging infrastructure is usually more developed.
