There are countless companies offering modernization packages for the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen, and remembering them all is practically impossible. Among those specializing in older G-Class models, Expedition Motor Company stands out, having just presented its new project.
Power and engine modernization
EMC calls this bright orange 250GD “historically correct,” but that is not entirely accurate. Of course, it looks very authentic; however, serious mechanical changes have been made, starting with the engine.
While EMC is happy to upgrade your classic G-Class with a new LS engine, this example retains the original 2.5-liter five-cylinder turbodiesel OM605a from Mercedes-Benz. Normally, this engine produces up to 150 hp, but thanks to a series of updates, including new upper camshafts and a turbocharger, the EMC version delivers around 225 hp, which is roughly double what the non-turbo versions of this engine can produce.
Exterior appearance and details
It is obvious that the added power will radically change how this G-Wagen behaves on the road. So, while this may be called a restoration rather than a true restomod, the latter term seems more appropriate.
In addition to the upgraded engine, EMC repainted this Mercedes in the color Magma Beam Orange and adorned the body with a number of new elements, all executed in black. This includes a new steel front bumper with a bullbar, black wheel arch extenders, a black roll cage, and black 17-inch Stahl wheels.
Interior and driving experience
Inside the SUV, quite a few changes have also taken place. To complement the exterior, it is trimmed in two-tone Doppio and Nasturtium leather with tinted oak veneer. New materials have also been used on the dashboard and steering wheel.
Sitting behind the wheel, driving this G-Wagen will likely feel very familiar to those who have had experience with such vehicles in the past. However, as soon as you press the gas pedal, the added power inevitably changes the impression.
This project by EMC demonstrates how classic style can be combined with modern technologies without losing the soul of the original vehicle. The bright orange color and black accents make it truly eye-catching, while the upgraded engine adds a dose of driving excitement that the old G-Class versions were lacking. This is not just a restoration, but a true reinterpretation of the legendary SUV, which preserves its recognizability but makes it much more interesting for the modern driver.
