The Hobbycar amphibian is a very rare car, as only 50 of these vehicles were produced in France during the years 1992-1995. One of them was stored for a long time in a museum in Nashville, USA.
From time to time, the Hobbycar was taken out to Lake Tennessee along with another rare amphibian – the German Amphicar from 1960. Passengers were often taken on such test drives. During one such outing, the French car suddenly started taking on water and soon sank.
The driver and passengers (among whom were children aged 5 and 9) were transferred to the Amphicar, but the car itself could not be saved. Only a few days later, divers discovered the amphibian and were able to retrieve it from the lake’s bottom.
Strangely enough, the sunken car is in decent condition. The biggest question is the 1.9-liter 92-horsepower Peugeot turbodiesel, but in any case, finding an engine replacement won’t be difficult.
