Mercedes-Benz S-Class, of course, has fast AMG versions, but the large premium car has practically not participated in races. However, few people know that there was even a rally S-Class.
This Mercedes-Benz 560 SEC coupe looks like a hero of the Mad Max movies, but it was actually prepared for the Paris-Dakar marathon in 1987. Drivers Bruno de Montaigu and Richard Lose truly participated in the rally but retired due to a transmission failure.
The project is truly interesting. The Mercedes W126 coupe received axles, an all-wheel-drive transmission, and tires from a G-Class. Its 5.5-liter 300 horsepower V8 works in tandem with a 3-speed automatic transmission.
The interior features sports bucket seats and a roll cage. Additionally, a 200-liter fuel tank is installed.
Interestingly, for ease of maintenance, the hood opens with the grille, headlights, and front wings. Furthermore, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has been turned into a liftback.
After Dakar, the Mercedes 560 coupe took part in another rally, and then it was forgotten for almost 20 decades. It was only in 2006 that the car was discovered and restored.
