Volkswagen is Developing a New GTI Version, But It’s Not the Model We Hoped For

Volkswagen is demonstrating that the GTI brand will not be left aside during the transition to electric vehicles. The German manufacturer made this clear by presenting a concept at the 2023 Munich Motor Show. While that showcase was focused on the future ID.2 GTI, everything now indicates that the next one will be the ID.3 GTI.

As reported by Auto Motor und Sport, the new model will be positioned above the ID.3 GTX Performance, which is equipped with a 79 kWh battery and an electric motor with 322 hp (240 kW) and 545 Nm of torque. This configuration allows the hatchback to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.7 seconds and have a range of up to 602 km according to the WLTP standard.

Details about the GTI version are still limited, but according to the publication, it will appear next year and will be rear-wheel drive. However, a significant power increase compared to the ID.3 GTX Performance should not be expected.

On the contrary, the car will likely receive only about 335 hp (250 kW). Although the increase is small, the updated powertrain may be accompanied by “serious chassis refinements… aimed at improving handling.”

In addition to technical improvements, the model is likely to inherit the characteristic stylistic elements of the GTI lineup. The sports hatchback will also develop the ideas of the updated base version, which has already received redesigned controls, a retuned suspension, and an optional adaptive chassis system DCC.

All these changes will likely affect the price—the ID.3 GTX Performance in Germany starts from €48,725. For comparison, the Golf GTI starts from €45,655, and the Clubsport version starts from €49,225.
