Toyota is actively working on reviving the GR Celica model and is also developing a new generation of the GR Supra. Both models are expected to receive both manual and automatic transmissions, providing a choice for different types of drivers.
Market Positioning
The new GR Celica will become one of the most anticipated models, combining nostalgia with modern technology. At the same time, Toyota does not plan to discontinue production of other sports cars, such as the GR 86 and GR Supra, each of which will occupy its own niche in the market.
The next GR 86 will likely remain an accessible coupe, while the GR Celica will occupy a higher position in terms of power and price, approaching the level of the Supra. This raises the question of how Toyota will avoid competition between these two models.
Technical Features
The answer may lie in giving each car unique characteristics. As sources report, the GR Celica may receive a mid-engine layout and all-wheel drive, with power around 400 hp. In contrast, the GR Supra will likely retain its front-engine layout and rear-wheel drive but will receive a hybrid system that increases total power to 500 hp.
Both cars may be equipped with a new turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine currently under development.
It is interesting why Toyota decided to use the name Celica instead of MR2 for a mid-engine model. Perhaps the MR2 name will be reserved for a future electric sports car.
Transmissions and Options
Both models are expected to offer a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, similar to the GR Corolla and GR Yaris. This will satisfy both fans of classic driving and those who prefer modern technology.
Toyota has not yet confirmed information about the GR Celica’s mid-engine layout, but prototype testing is ongoing. There is a possibility that the Celica and MR2 could return simultaneously, using a shared platform.
Release Dates and Prices
According to reports, the new GR Supra may appear in 2027, and the GR Celica in 2028, possibly after a concept presentation. However, Toyota is facing difficulties in developing the mid-engine GR Yaris M prototype, which could delay the launch of the production model.
Regarding prices, Japanese sources suggest the new GR Supra will cost from $54,100 to $67,700, while the GR Celica will cost from $47,400 to $54,100. These figures are approximate and may vary depending on the market.
The global sports car market continues to grow, and Toyota seems to be trying to occupy different segments by offering models with unique characteristics. It is important to note that the mid-engine layout, if implemented in the GR Celica, could become a key differentiator from most of the brand’s current sports cars. This could also indicate the future direction of Toyota’s electric models, especially considering the possible use of the MR2 name for them.
