A Porsche with encoded license plates spotted in Kyiv (photo)

On a car worth over 6 million hryvnias, one can see license plates with a symbolic combination of numbers. The thing is, 1488 means nothing to the average citizen, just an ordinary number. But in certain circles of conspiracy theorists and white nationalism ideology, these are not just numbers…

As Wikipedia states, 14/88, or fourteen words, is a code slogan (sometimes used as a greeting or signature) among neo-Nazis and other far-right groups. The number 14 stands for the fourteen words of white nationalism ideologist and founder of the terrorist organization “The Order”, David Lane. In turn, the number 88 is an encoded greeting for Heil Hitler!, as the letter H stands eighth in the Latin alphabet, and it also signifies the 88 precepts of the white man written by David Lane.

Whether such a number appeared coincidentally on an electric crossover Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo is a rhetorical question. However, as TopZhyr managed to find out from its sources at one of the Ministry of Internal Affairs service centers, it is not so easy to get a license plate with the numbers 1488 — on the “black” market, they ask at least 500 dollars for them. So, it turns out, the demand is there. By the way, with such numbers, it’s better not to go to Germany or Austria, where there is a list of numbers banned due to undesirable associations with the past.

Banned numbers in Germany

  • 18 (“Adolf Hitler”)
  • 28 (“Blood and Honor”)
  • 828 (“Heil, Blood and Honor”)
  • 74 (“Great Germany”)
  • 84 (“Heil Dir”)
  • 88 (“Heil Hitler”)
  • H8 (“Heil Hitler”)
  • 311 (“Ku Klux Klan”)
  • 444 (“Germany to Germans”)
  • 198 (“Sieg Heil”)
  • 1919 (“SS”)
  • 191 (“SA”)
  • 420 (April 20, Hitler’s birthday)
  • C18 (“Combat A. Hitler”)
  • 1488 (“Auf Deutschland, Heil Hitler”)

Few know, but another admirer of 1488 is the former mayor of Kharkiv and ex-MP Mykhailo Dobkin. Such numbers are on all his cars without exception, even on the hunchbacked Zaporozhets. By the way, this year, he became a deacon of the UOC-MP. As they say, life is unpredictable…

Another point of interest is a recent story about a Ukrainian with the license plate 0088. In Austria, his numbers were equated to Nazi ones!
