A rare 1948 Playboy A48 car has been put up for auction at RM Sotheby’s in the USA. The car is the namesake of the famous magazine but is not associated with it.
The Playboy company existed from 1947 to 1951. During that time, it produced only one model – a compact convertible measuring just 3.9 m in length.
The Playboy car is equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 40 hp and a 3-speed manual transmission. It could accelerate up to 120 km/h and consumed an average of 6.7 L/100 km.
Though the Playboy Convertible was cheap and economical, only about a hundred cars were sold. In post-war America, miniature cars with low-power engines were not in demand. However, now Playboy cars are sought after by collectors.
